End of second Coop, bye bye OPS !

Here it is, December 17th came and my second RIM coop term has ended. It was different that the first one, that's for sure! I have learned many new things, used and improved many of my old skills, said goodbye to Dong who left the team and moved on to Engineering to learn new stuff, and even had our manager fired! (we didn't caused it, promise !)

Turbulent coop term was crowned on Thursday night, night that was absolutely priceless! It started at 9pm with fantastic dinner at Crabby Joe's with my boys Adam, David, Manny and Zeeshan. We ate, drank and summarized the past fall, our relationships and our lives.

From midnight to 3am (eternal) Naythan and I performed the last Networking action together in the most secured RIM building in Waterloo and then in Hollywood manner with crazy slides on snowy roads and parking lots with (summer tires FTW !) we "raided" couple of other places for tea, candy and occasional mini-golf session!

Now is the time to have a little break until January 10th when my 5th out 6 semesters will start. Great thing is that I will be coming back to RIM and Waterloo in summer, but the sad part is that I will not be working with my old team - I have switched from Corporate Data Network Operations to Blackberry Academic Group. There I hope to be part of the efforts to get Blackberry knowledge in the Curriculum for Colleges and Universities. I am excited and little bit scared about the change and I am sad that I am leaving my team (I love you guys!), but I have changed a bit in these past 6 moths and I felt a subtle whisper in my soul, calling me to continue adventure and exploration of limits and the unknown me. Change becons and I will follow.

While I will spending Cristmas with Heather and her family (Thanks H!), I am still debating about the New Years Eve. I can't decide between nice, cozy cabin with fireplace and cooked wine an some unknown (masked) party that must be happening somewhere and I just need to find it and launch my brain into orbit. I do not have much time to plan and organize NYE thing, so that will mostly be a spontaneous action with absolutely unknown outcome. You will find out more in early January... ;)

And the Le Grande News is that my Mom is coming to visit in summer! That is going to be so AWESOME! We will have a blast, she is not even aware how fantastic it will be!

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1960 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1960 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won’t be still in class, disrupts other students.

1960 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2010 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1960 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has affair with psychologist.

Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1960 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.
2010 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.

1960 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
2010 - Pedro’s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro’s English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane pain t bottle, blows up a red ant bed.

1960 - Ants die.
2010 - BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny’s Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1960 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Mere za bezbedne stadione

U svetlu dva velika incidenta praćena nasiljem grupa povezanih sa fudbalskim navijačima iz Srbije, jedno od osetljivih pitanja pred FSS-om (Fudbalskim savezom Srbije) i nadležnim državnim organima je kako postupiti u slučaju predstojećeg ligaškog derbija Crvena Zvezda - Partizan za desetak dana.

BBC je o tome razgovarao stručnjacima za nasilje na stadionima i pre svega sa onima koji su učestvovali u rešavanju problema sa, nekada po nasilju čuvenim, engleskim navijačima.

Jedno od tela koje je u Britaniji nadležno da donošenje odluka o režimu bezbednosti na pojedinim utakmicama je "Uprava za bezbednost na fudbalskim stadionima".

Ključ u jedinstvenom planu

BBC je pitao direktora ove Uprave, Džona de Kuita: šta bi on radio da mu kojim slučajem bude poverena organizacija predstojećeg derbija izmedju Zvezde i Partizana u Beogradu?

"Prvo što bih u tom slučaju savetovao jeste da se svi, od javnih službi, policije, fudbalskog saveza do uprave stadiona, sastanu i da dogovore jedinstveni plan. Dakle, svi oni treba da rade zajedno, a ne svako za sebe. Posle toga bih utvrdio ko je odgovoran za šta, i procenio bih kolika je bezbednost na stadionu. Onda bih uključio navijače u celu priču i potrudio bi se da svi oni budu vidjeni kao deo jednog jedinstvenog plana za bezbedno održavanje utakmice", rekao je de Kuit BBC-ju.

Prvo što bih u tom slučaju savetovao jeste da se svi, od javnih službi, policije, fudbalskog saveza do uprave stadiona, sastanu i da dogovore jedinstveni plan. Džon de Kuit

"Na primer, značajno smo modernizovali stadione tako da su na svim velikim stadionima postavljena sedišta. Stadioni su dobro opremljeni tako da su postali mesta gde ljudi žele da idu. Takodje, postavili smo takav bezbednosni sistem gde iz kontrolne sobe pratimo sve što se na stadionu dešava. Svuda su postavljene kamere, čak i na ulazima gde posmatramo kako se navijači ponašaju. Na samom stadionu postavljamo bezbednjake i stjuarte koji prate situaciju. Tu je i policija koja ne mora da bude posebno opremljena. Njen angažman uglavnom je baziran na obaveštajnim podacima. Naravno, održavamo dobre veze sa vodjama navijača kako bismo osigurali da utakmica prodje u najboljem redu", objašnjava de Kuit iskustvo sa engleskim navijačima.

Protiv onih koji bacaju baklje i druge stvari na teren, u Engleskoj se primenjuje krivični zakon - a BBC-jev sagovornik kaže da je jedna od najefikasnijih mera - zabrana ulaska na stadion.

"Dakle, bilo kome ko narušava red i mir, može da bude izdata zabrana ulaska na stadion i to od 3 do 10 godina. Takodje, njima može da se zabrani i da putuju u inostranstvo na fudbalske utakmice kluba koji bodre. Ukoliko je to slučaj, svaki navijač koji ima zabranu ulaska na stadion, pre puta nacionlane reprezentacije ili tima koji bodri, mora da se javi u policiju i da preda svoj pasoš. I don't know how else to say this... I guess I just have to "spill" it out, however that turns out...
I am alone on this continent, from perspective of my family, friends and life that I knew for so long. Coming to Canada and spending these 3 years here were anything but easy.
When I came to a point of loneliness where I was not sure if and for how long I could still keep doing all of this that I now call life, it happened that I suddenly felt like I am not alone. Just for that brief moment, moment that was our weekend together, I felt like I am someone. I was not invisible, I was not a one of many strangers... I was not doubting who I am and what do I even know about myself.
I know I must have appeared strange at moments, might have said things that did not make much sense... I am not sure if I even scared some of you.
That was me tryng to understand what is happening to me; with me.
Just for a moment, I had a family.

Je ne sais pas comment le dire autrement...
Je suis seul sur ce continent, loin de ma famille, de mes amis et de la vie que je connaissait jusque là. Venir au Canada et passé 3 année ici a été tout sauf facile.
Lorsque j'en suis venu à un mo...ment de solitude, je n'étais plus certain de pouvoir continuer à faire ce que je considère maintenant être LA VIE. Soudainement, je ne me suis plus senti seul.
Pour ce bref moment, notre fin de semaine ensemble, je me suis senti comme quelqu'un.
Je n'étais plus invisible, je n'étais plus seulement qu'un parmi tant d'autres
Je ne me demandais plus qui j'étais.
Je sais que j'ai dû paraître étrange parfois, que j'ai dû dire des choses qui ne faisait pas de sens. Je ne sais pas si j'en ai même effrayer quelqu'un.
C'était moi, essayant de comprendre ce qu'il m'arrivait.
Pour l'instant d'un moment, j'ai eu une famille.

Prvi pismeni zadatak

Jesen je došla u naš mali grad

Leto se polako oprašta od mene, ali ostaće upamćeno po mnogim promenama koje su mi se desile.

Sve je počelo u maju koji je doneo rastanak sa Kaćom, moj do sada najveći životni neuspeh.

Preselio sam se u iznajmljenu sobu u kući koju delim sa gazdaricom Connie, drugovima Abdulom i Dišanom i drugaricom Maršom - bratstvo i jedinstvo crnih, braon i belih.

Bio sam u tri pičke materine na severu, u Frontier Ghosttownu na "Come Together" (rok) muzičkom festivalu gde sam osetio Vudstok duh sedamdesetih i osamdesetih.

Dobio sam stipendiju koja mi je spasila život i omogućila da preuzmem kola od Kaće, umesto da ih prodamo pa posle da jurim druga.

Položio sam vozački ispit za finalnu "G" vozačku dozvolu (bez restrikcija)

Proveo sam vikend na kampovanju sa Adrianom, roštiljali smo i igrali fudbal, pričali uz vatru i smrzli se ko pičke u toku noći u šatoru. Vredelo je svakog minuta.

Naučio sam nove kulinarske trikove od Ruže.

Bio sam na "RIB festu" (festivalu rebara) sa Ružom i Rajnhardom - jeo sam kuvani kukuruz i "pulled pork" (Google je tvoj prijatelj).

Video sam predstavu Cirque du Soleil "Alegria" i potpuno se oduševio, išao na koncert (prslog?) Santane i malo manje se oduševio. Što se koncerata tiče, još uvek sam pod utiskom Guns n Roses...

Navukao sam Adriana i Davida na fucu (uz malu pomoć Svetskog prvenstva), igrali smo ko blesavi i po najvećem suncu, pre i posle škole.

Provodio sam po ceo dan i poneku noć na koledžu učeći, radeći na silnim projektima a bogami i slatko se zabavljajući uz koledžijanski internet i projektore u učionicama... Long Live B222 !

Gledao sam izlazak punog avgustovskog meseca na jezeru Ontario sa Toronto skyline-om u pozadini.

Vozio sam bajs celo leto - ujutro u školu, u neko doba noći nazad kući.
Našao sam ga u garaži u totalnom raspadu i sa Rajnhardom ga vratio u život usput skinuvši punu kesu drangulija sa njega. Poslednjih par večeri vozio sam se raširenih ruku (skoro zatvorenih očiju), udišući svež večernji vazduh i osećajući se kao prava noćna ptica... Na momente sam bio u blokovima, na Savi...

Sada se spremam da se selim u Waterloo jer je škola gotova (za sada) i vreme je za novi "coop" semestar u RIM-u.

Ostalo je još da za vikend odem na Serbian Food Festival u Kitcheneru i da sledećeg vikenda još jednom posetim "Grad Duhova" na severu. Voleo bih da imam majicu Zagora za tu priliku. Možda uspem nešto da uradim po tom pitanju...


Leto se polako oprašta od mene, pozdravljamo se lagano, nemo, kao ljubavnici.
Udišem noćni vazduh i pokušavam da u umu isključim buku svakodnevnice i usporim svest do trenutka kada mi misli više nisu haotični roj i kada život nije reakcija, puki impuls i automatika.

Želim da sve u meni utihne i stane, da osetim ovaj momenat sada - čistu i kratku, jednostavnu sadašnjost, ovaj trenutak kada udišem duboko a zatim izdišem... nema sutra ni prekosutra, juče je odavno prošlo.... udišem... zadržavam dah, roj polako nestaje, izdah.... pauza, sve postaje tiše..... udah, kako lepo miriše ovaj vazduh (gle, čuju se zrikavci).... izdah... mrak.... udah...

Kiše dolaze.

Cirque du Soleil - Alegria

As a birthday present I was taken on Friday to "Air Canada Center" in Toronto for the Cirque du Soleil show called "Alegria".

When I first heard of Cirque du Soleil (CdS), I thought it's just another circus (which I was never a big fan of, together with zoo's). How wrong I was about CdS !

From the first moment of the show I realized that it is not just another circus. Unfortunately, I don't think I can find words to describe how beautiful and magical it was, I can only tell you that music and voice of the lead singer caused me goose-bumps many, many times and performers absolutely deserved the most sincere applause that they received from me and the rest of the audience.

When I came back home that night I did some research on CdS and I have found out that they have more than 20 different shows all over world, "Alegria" being just one of them! And they all look and feel different!

Now I must find a way to see the other ones. I have downloaded some of them, but I am not yet sure if I want to see them on a computer or even big screen - this kind of a performance is something that should only be seen LIVE.

Garfield Weston Award

On Friday I went to Centennial College Residence & Conference Centre for the Finalists interview weekend regarding my application for Garfield Weston Award.
Once registering at the Centre, we were given free evening since interviews were scheduled for Saturday.

After all the stress in the past few weeks and with tension build-up of the upcoming Award interviews, the swim came as a pure blessing !

After half an hour of chillaxing in the pool, I went to my room (that I have shared with Nick, designer from Niagara Falls) and after some reading of material that was given to us, I slipped into so much needed sleep. Suffice to say I slept like a baby... :)

Saturday started early, breakfast at 7:30.
The interviews started rolling, combined with very pleasant mingling with other finalists that were waiting for their interviews, and soon I had a total of four 1 on 1 interviews behind me.
Final panel with 4 members of the committee got me scheduled as the last one with more than 3 hours of waiting. Luckily, there were some very very very interesting people around me and also we had some games to play (brought by one of the finalists), so those 3 hours passed in slightly nervous but quite fun atmosphere.

Game that we played at our table was called "Apples and Apples" and is basically played like this:

Each player is dealt seven "red apple" cards; on each is printed a noun or noun phrase, or possibly a gerund. The judge (a chosen player) draws a random "green apple" card from the deck on which is printed an adjective ("scary", "frightening", "patriotic", etc.), and places it face-up on the table for everybody to see. Then each player (except the judge) chooses a card that they think is the best match for the green apple card, and places it face-down. The judge shuffles the red apple cards, reads them (often aloud), and decides which noun is the best match for the adjective. This decision is subjective; the official rules encourage the judge to pick the match that is "most creative, humorous or interesting".
The player who submitted the chosen red apple card wins the round, and takes the green apple card to signify the win. All players then draw red cards until they have seven again, and the role of "judge" may pass to another person (generally going to the next player in line, though some rules have the round's winner becoming "judge").

Time came for me to go for my final panel meeting with 4 members of committee. I won't go into details of the interview, only thing that I can say is that I used barbeque as an example for one of the questions. :)
After it was finished, all of us finalists said goodbye to each other and everyone left for their homes (all over Canada). Hopefully, emails that we exchanged will help us stay in touch, some of the people were really interesting.

I went back from Toronto to my little den in Brahmaputra and after so needed  MJ relaxing evening, I called it over for June 19th.


Today, June 20th,  I have received a call from committee telling me that I HAVE WON THE AWARD !!!

YIIPIIIIEEEE !!!!

What a coincidence, to get it on my BIRTHDAY !!!! Unbelievable !!!

I am so happy, I don't even know how happy I am !
I mean, this can be THE most important moment for me in Canada.

Cooking with Chef Milan - Lesson one: Preparation is half of the success !

Tonight I have cooked my first peas & meat (grashak s' mesom) in my cooking career.
I have made it without "zaprshka", flour & aleva paprika mix that is supposed to be added to the already cooked peas at the very end to make it thicker and tastier. By the way, it is a general belief that "zaprshka" is very unhealthy, but that is nothing new - everything that's awesome is usually totally unhealthy.
True or not, that was not the reason why I've made my peas plain. Real reason was the fact that I went "bez kurca na svadbu", meaning I started cooking after I came back from school in the evening without confirming that I have necessary flour and aleva paprika for that final touch - "zaprska". So, involuntarily, I have made it healthier.
It turned out very good , much better than what I thought it will be from my first try, but I will definitely try to make another one WITH zaprshka, just to do it properly and see how will all that taste then.

Feeding at RIM

The day usualy starts with either breakfast at home or a sandwich when I get to work.
But then, unexpectedly, Sheldon comes to work with a bag in which there are two boxes spreading beautiful scent of spring/summer. Suddenly, the day becomoes much sunnier and merrier... :)

Italian dream-house DJ Robert Miles rose from relative obscurity to score one of the biggest and most unlikely hits of 1996 with his monster single "Children".

Fishnet Stockings

Nylon fiber was first introduced to the public at the New York Worlds Fair in 1939. The first thing nylon was used for was nylon stockings in 1940. Body stockings are more suitable for bodies that are toned and evenly shaped in all sizes. A body stocking will help you slip into a dress that is just slightly too small, but it won’t turn a size 12 into a size 8 so don’t expect a miracle

Driving by night on highways in Canada is probably the closest I will come to feeling like being in a spaceship.

I was driving from Waterloo to Brampton one night and I had this feeling that wasn't really a flash but more like another transparent layer of perception that has come on top of the primary, "real" layer, so it looked and felt like I was experiencing two different realities at the same time, overlapped.

They were different but in some strange, weird and familiar way very similar.

I was in my car, surrounded by impenetrable darkness, occasionally passing other vehicles and every once in a while passing near some human habitats and it felt, looked and really resembled and resonated in my soul like I was in space. My car was my spaceship, darkness around me was deep space and rare vehicles around me were other space travelers - traders, adventurers, rogues, pirates and freelancers like myself. Rare and distant cities I was passing by were small systems, planets and space stations that you see as you travel through populated space. In that big nothingness and blackness the only thing keeping me alive was my spaceship, the only things breaking silence were hum of the ship's engine and quiet music coming from my ship's sound system, playing music that made me feel closer and more united with myself and everythingness around me.

As I was experiencing those two layers, amused and surprised and intrigued and I don’t even know the word to describe the experience of those two layers being so different but matching so perfectly together, it was then that I suddenly saw a big mass on the horizon.

It looked like we are on the same course, just that mass was moving slower than me. I kept my course that would bring me closer to it. As i was getting closer I realized that mass is actually not one big mass but a group of objects in space, moving together.

Soon enough I was passing by a fleet of huge freighters, a large space caravan !

Their individual size multiplied by their numbers was accentuated by their slow moving speed, making them simultaneously look scary, gracious, magnificent and powerful. In awe, I felt so small in my little ship as I was looking at them through my cockpit.

My speed being slightly greater than theirs I slowly passed by them and left them behind me. I threw a last look at that large space beast in my rear-view monitor and soon enough I was again alone in space. Music was soothing, engine was humming and darkness closed around me once again.

Few more light years and I will reach system Brampton and land for a little while...

Here it is, long waited status update of Waterloo adventure !

It has been an interesting 2 months !

I moved to a new city called Waterloo and started working as a coop student for Research in Motion (RIM), number one company in Canada and World's number one growing company (if you follow the link, you may find out even more interesting stuff about RIM).

To my surprise, for which i entirely blame my working experiences from Serbia (except Beogrid), company is consisted of extreme, wonderfuly big, large, HUGE number of young people ! :)

But, let's start from the beginning. Well, we don't have to go all the way to the beginning of everything, but let's go back to the beginning (this word is so hard to type!) of year 2010.

As you may or may not know, i am a student of Sheridan College in Brampton, Canada.

I am taking a 3 year program called "Software Development and Network Engineering", which is consisted of regular full-time school and 3 times 4 months of coop terms, and which i will hopefully end in December 2011.

To make things easier to understand, lets put it like this (each part is 4 months):

school -> school -> school -> coop -> school -> coop -> school -> coop -> school

In December i have finished my third semester (out of 6) of school and time came for me to start my first 4 months long coop term (semester of work instead of school - praksa). I have been applying for 17+ jobs through my college coop system when I got offer to work for RIM. In Waterloo. 100km from Brampton, 150km from Toronto.

There it was, a decision to be made.

Refuse RIM and look for something else, somewhere closer or accept the offer from RIM and...

...move to Waterloo.

So, here i am.

I have been working for almost two full months and didn't get too much chance to see the city. During the week i have two days (tuesdays and thursdays) when i have to work in the evening because i am working as a network assistant and some changes to the network can be made only after regular working hours.
Other days i'm either too tired or too annoyed by (shity) winter weather so i just go to my rented basement where i have established my Waterloo HQ and then i get myself working on all kinds of crazy ideas that i have, like switching blogs or creating new ways of memorizing important stuff (MEC) or trying to draw some kind of diagram of computer network that i have created so far all over the World (New Belgrade + Brampton outpost + W'loo).... It never ends...

Friday comes and then i go to Brampton to spend the weekend with Katarina. I usualy return on Sunday night and then - rinse, repeat.

That's about it so far, if some new exciting stuff happens you will be the first to know !
